Opposition Governors Agree On Political Party Merger

Ten governors from four of Nigeria’s leading political parties, "extremely concerned about the state of the nation,” met in Lagos today in an effort to consolidate merger moves of their parties towards inspiring a better-led Nigeria.
The governors came from the ACN, CPC, ANPP and APGA.
Present at the gathering, which was hosted by Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, were the governors of Borno, Ekiti, Imo, Lagos, Nassarawa, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Yobe and Zamfara.  The governor of Borno State was represented by a top State official.

In the unprecedented move, the governors, under the umbrella of "progressive and patriotic leaders," said they were endorsing a merger of their parties as a political tool for rescuing Nigeria from its current administrative mess, resolving that “to rescue Nigeria is a task that must be done.”
At the meeting, which was convened at the Marina Government Lodge, the governors affirmed that they were meeting in the best interest of Nigeria.
"As governors, we fully endorse the merger initiatives already commenced by our various political parties and we will put our full weight behind these efforts,” they said.  “Nigeria is greater than all of us and we have a duty to make it work for our people and the future of our children".
The meeting which lasted close to four hours, is being interpreted as a strong warning by the opposition to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party. The resolve this time around suggests that all the parties are willing to make the necessary sacrifice to ensure that the merger idea, which has been around since the 2003 election, succeeds.
For the parties involved, SaharaReporters learned that the next and critical meeting has already been scheduled, and the governors in attendance today, and others that were not present, are expected to attend.
