Joseph Waweru cannot reach into his pocket for change, get into fights and he certainly won't be washing his own clothes. Sacrifices must be made to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for the world's longest nails

Joseph Waweru and his 1.3 foot long, lacquered nails are famous in Mombasa. He is a tourist attraction of sorts, earning anything from KES 2500 ($28) to KES 5000 ($56) per day.
In an interview with Nairobi News, Waweru said: “I apply nail polish with the colours of the Kenya flag because most tourists, who want to take a photo with me like my nails with the colours of our national flag.” He does not use nail hardener to keep his nails from breaking but files them

.
He has to keep the nails on his left hand protected, so that means no household chores, street fights or any type of activity that would cause him to break them. He also wraps his nails with newspaper or cloth when he is walks around Mombasa and Nairobi.
Waweru has been diligently growing his nails for twelve years, and at 33 years of age, one of his ambitions is to beat Lee Redmond (The Guiness Book of World Records’ woman with the longest nails, with a total length of 28 ft 4.5 in). Waweru is in a relationship with a woman who supports him, and he does not care what anyone thinks of him and his goal.
