Anthony Tolson, who played bass and had toured with top acts like Ne-Yo, Young Jeezy and Kelis, was headed over to his mother's house to celebrate the holiday with his daughter and two sons.
Tolson never made it to see Amber, 13, Aaron, 12, and William, seven, after two assailants told the 33-year-old to step out of his Chevrolet Trailblazer and shot him dead around 9.30pm, the Detroit Free Press reported.
The Trailblazer contained Tolson's bass and the presents he was bringing to his children so they could all open them together on Christmas morning.
Tolson had just turned 33 over the weekend and had celebrated his birthday by going to see The Force Awakens with his sons.

Tolson, who could also play drums, steel drums, piano and trombone, was training to become an ordained minister but was also still concentrating on his promising music career.
The talented bass player had the 'ability to lay each and every groove with precise clarity and tasteful funk' and his 'smooth approach' gave him 'a style and sound unlike no other'.
His ex-girlfriend Karla Pace said: 'It's horrible.
'It's so hard, because he's such a good person.
'Things like this shouldn't happen to people that have a good heart and care about people so much.'

Despite touring the world, Tolson was humble and took his local church gigs just as seriously.
His friend Brent Easton said: 'You wouldn't even know what he did or who he played for unless you looked him up.'
