Patrick Zamarripa and newlywed Brent Thompson named as first two Dallas officers killed in deadliest attack on police since 9/11

The first two of five police officers killed by snipers during Thursday's attack in Dallas have been identified. Officer Brent Thompson (top), 43, worked for the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) and was the first of their officers to be killed on duty since they were formed in 1989. Thompson had just married a fellow DART officers two weeks ago. 

The second dead officers has been named unofficially as Patrick Zamarripa (bottom), of the Dallas Police Department. His stepbrother Dylan Martinez posted a picture of him with his father, tweeting: 'No father should have to bury his son. You are a hero, Patrick. Love you man.' The mass shooting is the deadliest incident for members of law enforcement in the US since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

DART police spokesman Morgan Lyons said in the wake of the fatal attack: 'As you can imagine, our hearts are broken. 

'This is something that touches every part of our organization. We have received countless expressions of support and sympathy from around the world through the evening. We are grateful for every message. Thank you.'

Misty McBride, another DART police officer and a mother-of-one, was also named among the wounded as her father said she was hit in the shoulder and abdomen while on patrol. 

McBride is recovering in hospital after being forced to crawl to safety when she was shot twice while in uniform. 

According to social media accounts, McBride has served with DART for more than six years after previously working as a jailer with the Dallas County Sheriff Department for two years. 

WFAA-TV reported that DART officers Omar Cannon and Jesus Retana were in hospital but expected to recover from their injuries.
