A star footballer in the early 80s, Ogbein Fawole who relocated to the United Kingdom in 2001 returned to Nigeria empty handed about two weeks ago.

Fawole who captained IICC Shooting Stars during the ill fated final of the African Champions Cup now (CAF Champions League) against the Zamalek of Egypt in Lagos in 1984 died of heart failure otherwise known as cardiac arrest according to his immediate junior brother, Harry Ogbein.

The remains of the prolific defender who is survived by a wife and four children has been deposited at the morgue pending the decision of the family for his burial plans after meeting this week.

Mr Fawole who abandoned his wife, kids and siblings in Nigeria has been struggling to settle down in the United Kingdom since then but nothing worked for him.

A source revealed to our reporter that when Ogbein Fawole was sent back to Nigeria empty handed, he was heartbroken and he had to secretly stay with a friend in Lagos, avoiding his family in Ibadan.

When he developed complication, he was forced to give his relatives phone number to his friend and when he eventually died last week Monday, his friend called his family to break the news to them.

His strange lifestyle came as a huge surprise to his family in Ibadan before the news of his death was broken to them.

Ogbein Fawole, former Green Eagles defender and IICC Shooting Stars Captain is dead Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports in Oyo State, Hon.Abayomi Oke and the Oyo State FA boss Chief James Odeniran has joined in mourning with the Shooting Stars management and the family of the deceased while reacting separately over the sudden occurrence.

The Commissioner described Ogbein’s death as a shock and another big loss to the Oyo State football family haven just lost an active member of the team to a serial killing in Bayelsa State.

Chief Odeniran however, called for prayers and said  “May God stop this calamity within our football circle, Ogbein was an important member of Shooting Stars in the 80s and he has always demonstrate his love for the club even after leaving. May God give his family the fortitude to bear the sudden loss”, he noted.
